Papier Mache Chanukah Dreidel

Papier Mache Chanukah Dreidel

This favorite Hanukkah toy is made of paper mache.  This dreidel is carefully hand-painted in multi-pastel colors, with different Jewish & Israelis scenes in each side of it.  The herewith photo shows each of the four sides of the dreidel.  Take a look at it to get an idea of this beautifully made papier mache sevivon!

The four letters which appear on the four sides of the dreidel alude to the miracle of Hanukkah.  They spell out: Nes (N-miracle), Gadol (G-great), Haya (H-happened)  and Poh (P-here, meaning in Israel).

Dimensions (approx.): 8cm(H) x 4.3cm(W) (3-1/5″H x 1-4/5″W)

The Dreidel The dreidel is one of the best known symbols of Chanukah.  It is a four sided top with a Hebrew letter on each side: Nun, Gimmel, Hey and Pey (or Shin). On the surface, these letters stand for “Nes Gadol Hayah Poh (or Sham) - A great miracle happened here (or there)”.

It commemorates the miraculous victory of a faithful few over the might of the Greek Empire. On a deeper level, however, the dreidel is a microcosmic representation of the four kingdoms: Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome - spinning around the center, the Jewish People.

To play, a player spins the dreidel. When it stops, the letter that is facing up decides the fate of the player.  NUN - nothing happens, next player spins the dreidel.

GIMEL - player takes all tokens in the pot.
HEY - player takes half of the pot.
PEY/SHIN - player must put one token into the pot.

Players use pennies, nuts, raisins or chocolate coins (gelt) as tokens or chips.
